Air Flow Control Using Dampers
How are Ventilation Dampers used?
Industrial ventilation dampers are primarily used for these common facility tasks:
- To regulate temperature by mixing ambient air with process air
- For fan isolation in 100% redundant scenarios. Usually these are electrically actuated and isolate the fan that is not in operation.
- To control fan performance by managing air pressure (These are typically manual modulating dampers installed at the exhaust fan outlet.)
- To control ambient air bleed-in
- To maintain consistent airflow through an air pollution control system in cases where gas inflow varies and the APC device requires a constant flow rate
- To manage contaminant concentrations, particularly where process exhaust rates are low. (For example, where reactor exhaust has a high concentration of nitric acid and a relatively low gas flow rate, it can be advantageous to bleed-in ambient air to dilute the process gas to a more manageable concentration. This also reduces demand on the scrubber, even though the actual contaminant loading is the same.)
